A very interesting conference, entitled “The International Environment After the Iraq Crisis” has being organized on Monday, 3 March 2003 by the Research and Development Center – Intercollege in cooperation with the Centre for World Dialogue. The speakers were Christos Iacovou, Assistant Professor of International Relations, Intercollege, Eran Lerman, Head, American Jewish Committee Office, Israel, Walid Khadduri, Editor-In-Chief, Middle East Economic Survey, Christos Ioannides, Professor of International Relations, Intercollege, Nadia Arbatova, Head of Section, Department of European Studies, IMEMO, Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia, George Poukamissas, Embassy of Greece, Nicosia and Farid Mirbagheri, Associate Professor of International Relations, Intercollege.

From the fruitful discussion that followed the presentations and the interventions, several interesting points were made. Oil might be one of the reasons for the imminent war against Iraq but certainly is not the primary cause of the crisis. Furthermore, it was pointed out that a vacuum of security and stability, in the broader area, may be created the day after the war. Finally, it was underlined that the crisis affects adversely the relations between the USA and the EU.
