THE CYPRUS PROBLEM IN THE DOMESTIC POLITICS OF TURKEY

Important lecture by Turkish-Cypriot academic

In an event organized by the Research and Development Center – Intercollege on 29.3.2004, the Turkish Cypriot Assistant Professor of International Relations Mehmet Hasgüler gave a lecture titled “The Cyprus Problem in the Domestic Politics of Turkey”. The speaker gave a comprehensive analysis of his theme, and in relation to Cyprus he expressed, among other things, the view that the island will have better prospects if guarantees (by Britain, Greece and Turkey), are abandoned, and if, at the same time, unifying elements are promoted in the relations between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The Director General of the Research and Development Center – Intercollege Professor Andreas Theophanous, announced that the Center will be undertaking initiatives for further discussion of these ideas and prospects with the participation of all parties involved as well as foreign analysis. The coordinator of the event, which was attended by Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots and foreigners, was Mr. Ibrahim Aziz.
