EU Enlargement and the Eastern Mediterranean

EU Enlargement and New Security Challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean, edited by S. Victor Papacosma, Andreas Theophanous, James Sperling, Nicosia, Intercollege Press, 2004 (252 pages).
The Eastern Mediterranean, into which the EU has further expanded through the accession of Cyprus, is one of the geostrategically most important regions on the globe. The EU enlargement into this area will have political as well as security ramifications for the broader region.
The book “EU Enlargement and New Security Challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean” is the product of an international conference organized by the Research and Development Center – Intercollege in collaboration with the Lyman L. Lemnitzer Center for NATO and EU Studies (Kent state University) on 16 – 17 May, 2003. Eighteen academics, diplomats and analysts have contributed to the book with their conference presentations or with specially written articles, treating various parameters of the issues resulting from the recent enlargement of the EU and the geostrategic, political, economic and social developments that have taken place in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Among the topics being analyzed are the EU’s efforts to build a common foreign and security policy, the future of the Transatlantic Alliance, and prospects for regional security and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.
