Events - November / December 2008

The period of November to December 2008 has been very busy for the Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs, as it organized and hosted numerous events, some of which are:

 

1. Current Trends in International Relations: Monday, 10 November 2008   

The Center brought together respected international and Cypriot speakers when it hosted a one day Conference entitled Current Trends in International Relations, which addressed three themes (a) Ethnic Conflict and the International Environment; (b) The USA in the Post – Bush Era; and (c) Economic Challenges and Opportunities. 

 
 

Panelists included, in  order of presentation: Dr. Sriprapha Petcharamesree, from Mehidol University, Thailand and Asia-Europe Foundation who spoke on “Stories from Borders and Stories of Borders”, Prof. Andreas Theophanous University of Nicosia, Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs who spoke on “ Ethnic Conflict, Conflict Resolution and the Case of Cyprus”, Prof. Van Coufoudakis Rector Emeritus, University of Nicosia who spoke on the “Challenges and Opportunities for the US in the post-Bush Era”, Dr. Herbert R. Reginbogin, Touro Law School, New York, USA who spoke on Towards a Watershed in US Global Policy: From Neo-Conservatism to Neo-Rationalism”, Dr. Miroslav N. Jovanovic, University of Geneva and United Nations, Economic Commission for Europe who spoke on Does Globalization Make Sense?” and Yiannis Tirkides, Research Fellow at the Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs who spoke on The International Economic Crisis and its Implications.

 
 

2. The EU's Position in the World and the Challenges Ahead: Monday, 08 December 2008

The event was co-organized with the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, University of Cyprus, and Chaired by Joseph Joseph, Professor of International Relations and Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, University of Cyprus.  His Excellency Nicolas Galey, Ambassador of France in the Republic of Cyprus delivered the opening address.

 
 

The other panelists included Guy Harpaz President of the Israeli Association for the Study of European Integration, Jean Monnet Lecturer, Law Faculty of International Relations Hebrew University of Jerusalem Mount who spoke on “The EU as a Global Player: The Rhetoric Vs the Record” and Tozun Bahcheli, Professor of Political Science King's University College at the University of Western Ontario who spoke on “EU-Turkish Relations since Justice and Progress Party’s (AKP’s) Ascent to Power”. The concluding remarks were delivered by Andreas Theophanous, Professor of Political Economy, University of Nicosia and Director of the Cyprus Center for European and International Affair, who spoke  on the “EU-US Relations in the post-Bush era”

 
 

3. Book Presentation “Testimonials from a Previous Era–Μαρτυρίες Μιας Άλλης Εποχής” Christos Karydis:  Monday, 15 December 2008

The book “Testimonials from a Previous Era – Μαρτυρίες Μιας Άλλης Εποχής” is a compilation of 16 interviews mostly by local political, financial and social leaders selected out of 200 or so interviews gathered by the author, Christos Karydis, during a 20 year period he worked as a journalist.  The event was well attended with some of the interviewees in the audience.

   
   

The event was chaired by journalist Panicos Hadjipanayi. The book was presented by  Dr. Eleni Theocharous from the Democratic rally, Member of  Parliament and Poet. The event was concluded by an expression of thanks by the writer, Christos Karydis.
