Main Activities of the Research Center - Intercollege

In the last two months the Research Center – Intercollege participated in a major international conference on Turkey in Berlin, organized a seminar on Federalism and subsidiarity in the EU in Nicosia as well as a series of events in the framework of the PRINCE program “Raising Green Awareness, Creating Active Citizens”.

Earlier, in April, the Center organized a seminar entitled “Federalism and Subsidiarity in the EU - Lessons for Cyprus” with the participation of the Ambassador of the Republic of Austria, Mrs. Eva Hager and Professor Heinrich Neisser of the Institute of Political Science at Innsbruck University.
In addition, four events entitled “Tourism, Protected Areas and Climatic Changes”, “Biodiversity, Natural Resources and Soil”, “Ground-Sea-and Coastal Waters – Fishing and Fish Culture” and “Health and Genetically Modified Organisms” were organized within the framework of the European Commission funded PRINCE programme “Raising Green Awareness, Creating Active Citizens”.

On Wednesday, 7 June 2006, the Research Center – Intercollege in collaboration with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Cyprus and the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, is organizing a seminar on “EU Enlargement and Russia”. The keynote speaker will be Nadzhaf E. Abdullaev, Head of Division, Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Russia who will elaborate on “Russia and the EU Enlargement: Security Implications in the Eastern Mediterranean”. Themis Themistocleous, Head of Representation of the European Commission in the Republic of Cyprus will deliver a welcoming address whilst Andreas Theophanous, Professor of Political Economy and Director General of the Research Center – Intercollege will make an intervention to initiate the discussion, which will be chaired by Van Coufoudakis, Professor of Political Science, and Rector of Intercollege.
On June 17, 2006 a conference entitled “Environmental Acqui Communataire: a critical approach” will be organized by the Unit of Environmental Studies of the Research Center – Intercollege. The conference is organized in the framework of the project “Raising Green Awareness, Creating Active Citizens”, which is funded by the European Commission. George Kremlis on behalf of the European Commission will present the environmental acqui communataire and its implementation in member states, Dr.Adamos Adamou, MP of the European Parliament will elaborate on the role of the European citizens and parliament in the implementation of the acqui communataire.
