News of the Center

In the past two months, the Research Center – Intercollege has worked intensively on the conclusion of a series of policy papers and research work, including two books: “Accession to the Eurozone and the Reunification of the Cyprus Economy”, edited by Andreas Theophanous and Yiannis Tirkides, and “Cyprus, the EU and the Stakes Involved” (In Greek by Andreas Theophanous: “Η Κύπρος, η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση και τα Διακυβευόμενα Συμφέροντα: H Ένταξη και Λύση”). The books will be published in the forthcoming months.

In the period beginning on September 1, the Center will launch a new series of round-table discussions, conferences and seminars focusing on Cyprus, the Middle East, the European Union and the broader strategic areas and issues.

Successful Completion of Events

On Wednesday, 7 June 2006, the Research Center – Intercollege in collaboration with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Cyprus and the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, successfully organized a seminar on “EU Enlargement and Russia”. The keynote speaker was Nadzhaf E. Abdullaev, Head of Division, Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Russia who delivered a speech on “Russia and the EU Enlargement: Security Implications in the Eastern Mediterranean”. Andreas Theophanous, Professor of Political Economy and Director General of the Research Center – Intercollege made an intervention and initiated the discussion, which was chaired by Van Coufoudakis, Professor of Political Science, and Rector of Intercollege.

On June 17, 2006 a conference entitled “Environmental Acquis Communataire: a critical approach” was organized by the Unit of Environmental Studies of the Research Center – Intercollege. The conference was organized in the framework of the project “Raising Green Awareness, Creating Active Citizens”, which is funded by the European Commission. George Kremlis on behalf of the European Commission presented the environmental acquis communataire and its implementation in member states, Dr.Adamos Adamou, MP of the European Parliament elaborated on the role of the European citizens and national parliaments in the implementation of the acquis communataire.
