"The course of the Cyprus Problem and Turkey after December 17, 2004"

A timely and interesting discussion, on “The Course of the Cyprus Problem and Turkey after

December 17, 2004”, was organized by the Research and Development Center – Intercollege in

collaboration with the Association for Social Reform (OPEK) on Thursday, 13 January 2005. The

speakers were Eleni Mavrou, Member of Parliament, AKEL party, Tassos Mitsopoulos, Press Spokesman

of the Democratic Rally party (DISY), Andreas Theophanous, Professor of Political Economy and Director

General of Research and Development Center – Intercollege, and Georghios Colocassides, Political Analyst,

Member of the Democratic Party (DIKO). Welcoming addresses were made by Symeon Matsis, Member of

the Executive Committee of the Association for Social Reform and Lysandros Avraamides, Deputy Director

General of the Research and Development Center – Intercollege. The conference was chaired by Vangelis

Coufoudakis, Professor of Political Sciences and Rector of Intercollege.

 

Aspects of the Cyprus problem in relation to possible developments in EU-Turkish relations as Turkey moves

towards accession negotiations were addressed and discussed. There was keen audience participation in the

lively debate which followed the presentations of the four speakers.
